2012

Computer graphic disaster movie master Roland Emmerich presents perhaps his best effort to date visually, just not story-wise.  CGI is definitely improving in leaps and bounds these days and this film proves it with, what are arguably the hardest things to realize in computer graphics looking about as real as possible in this film – fire and water.

The Time Traveler's Wife

Chronicling the life of Henry DeTamble (played by Eric Bana of Hulk, The Other Boleyn Girl and Star Trek), a Chicago librarian with a rare genetic disorder that causes him to keep jumping through time at, usually, the most inopportune moments like his own wedding or when he is most stressed.

The Ugly Truth

Bringing in another romantic comedy to the 2009 roster of films are Katherine Heigl (27 Dresses) and Gerard Butler (300, Gamer).  Heigl is no stranger to the romantic comedy, being the central character in 27 Dresses, and plays morning TV show producer Abby whos show is struggling in the ratings and is in danger of being cancelled if things don’t improve.

The Final Destination

Following in the footsteps of the previous Final Destination movies, ‘The‘ Final Destination (not given the moniker of Final Destination ’4′ for some reason) regurgitates the plot about someone in a group of people having a premonition about their impending deaths and therefore manages to get the group to safety before disaster strikes.

Funny People

What do you get when you cross Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and a script that combines drama with comedy?

A huge travesty!

Seriously, I’d been led to believe that this film was going to be more comedy than drama, but it turns the intent was for it to be the other way around and ended up missing both marks with the drama being so undramatic as to be boring and the comedy was very, very uncomedic thus, even more boring.

District 9

Creating one of the most unique films of the year starring a cast of all complete unknowns is probably a big risk on the part of movie companies but I’d have to say that it really was worth the effort in this case.

The Proposal

The first of two romantic comedies to have been shown in the cinema recently, followed up by the more recent ‘The Ugly Truth’.  Both are funny films and as entertaining for the guys in the cinema as they are for the girls, but I’d probably have to pick ‘The Ugly Truth’ as the (slightly) better of the two.

G.I. Joe - The Rise of Cobra

Presumably following on from the success of converting their Transformers brand to the big screen, Hasbro began making plans to convert their other properties to celluloid, starting with G.I. Joe (Action Force to those Brits old enough to remember the difference).

I’m not normally one to publish gossip on my blog or reprint articles from other web sites, but I thought this was quite funny really and the ‘response’ post by Michael Bay’s crew has already been removed from the ‘Shoot For The Edit‘ site in the interests of keeping the peace (I presume).

Harry Potter Half Blood Prince

The Harry Potter books ended up on my bookshelf after watching the first film in one of those moments of clarity where an idea seems like a really good one but later becomes a rather distant memory.  That didn’t stop me buying each of the subsequent volumes in an un-convincing attempt to convince myself to read them though and they’re all still gathering dust, errr, somewhere.
