The Time Traveler's Wife

Chronicling the life of Henry DeTamble (played by Eric Bana of Hulk, The Other Boleyn Girl and Star Trek), a Chicago librarian with a rare genetic disorder that causes him to keep jumping through time at, usually, the most inopportune moments like his own wedding or when he is most stressed.  For the most part, his time travelling is limited to his own lifetime but this doesn’t always apply – he does always leave his clothes behind though which forms a strange introduction to his future wife…

Even with this somewhat annoying ‘ability’, Henry meets his future wife Clare Abshire (played by Rachel McAdams of The Notebook and Wedding Crashers) during one of his travels whilst she is a young girl and both of them spend the rest of their lives attempting to build a life together, and trying to have children together which, given the genetic disorder is inherited by Henry’s children, causes numerous failed attempts and miscarriages which carry a lot of emotion during the film.

That is just one part of an overall engrossing story though, as there is lots of emotion with Henry’s time travelling landing him the most awkward and risky situations; the fun of Henry being able to attend his own wedding as his future self instead of his younger, correctly aged, self and happiness of being able to travel to the future to meet his future daughter as well as to the past to meet his deceased mother.

This movie seems to be billed or considered as a ‘chick-flick’ in a lot of places/web sites/magazines that I have seen but, to be honest, it is a really enjoyable movie for both guys and girls even if, yes, it does have a very emotional part to it and is heavily biased towards the romantic. That’s the whole point of the story though so you can’t really escape from it, but it just isn’t anywhere near as cheesy as your average ‘chick-flick’.

I really did feel myself getting drawn in to the story and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is probably a better movie than a lot of others that have been released over the past few months so, if you can turn your attentions away from the action and explosions for a while, you’ll hopefully find this to be a lot more worthwhile than those other movies as well.
