Bringing in another romantic comedy to the 2009 roster of films are Katherine Heigl (27 Dresses) and Gerard Butler (300, Gamer). Heigl is no stranger to the romantic comedy, being the central character in 27 Dresses, and plays morning TV show producer Abby whos show is struggling in the ratings and is in danger of being cancelled if things don’t improve.
In a bid to turn things around, Abby’s boss Stuart (played by Nick Searcy) hires Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), host of cable TV show ‘The Ugly Truth’ which offers dating advice to women, generally given in the most crude way possible.
As well as turning Abby’s show ratings around, Mike also agrees to help turn Abby’s love life around by helping her snag her dream guy and neighbour Colin (played by Eric Winter) just by following the same kind of advice that he would provide on his show, the same kind of advice that Abby finds so appalling and cynical.
There are plenty of laughs en route, some of which confirm the films ‘R’ rating (and therefore the cuts by the Malaysian censorship board), some of which we’ve seen and heard before (company dinner reflecting When Harry Met Sally) but almost all of them being done well and in such a way to make you still have a good laugh at them all old or new.
Obviously, Mike and Abby also have to get together before the film is over and there is that usual hiccup in the road which almost throws a spanner in the whole works before all’s well that ends well. The core plot is nothing new but the guy being the one giving the girl advice is at least a long needed spin on the subject.
The Ugly Truth is a great way to spend 90 minutes and shouldn’t be seen as another film just to take your girlfriend/wife to – the guys can enjoy it as much the girls this time.
